Young Members Forum helps teenage mothers and infants

The Young Members Forum of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, in view of the International Youth Day that fell on August 12th, conducted a program at the Sarvodaya Suwasetha Sewa Society in Moratuwa. 

The YMF used the occasion to distribute dry rations and other essential items for teenage mothers and infants, that were collected from various

orgarnisations including the staff members of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and also the YMF members.  Some of the main contributors to this worthy cause were, Sunshine Health Care (Pvt) Ltd, & Imperial Teas (Pvt) Ltd. 

Sarvodaya Suwasetha maintains 8 child development centres, 1 special Child Development Centre for teenage mothers, 5 pre-schools, 4 elders homes including 1 home for women with disabilities/special needs. 

Ma Sevana provides residential care and protection for teenage mothers who are victims of sexual abuse and have fallen pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Girls as young as 12 years reside in this home. The main aim of the organization is to give these teenage mothers, a family environment, proper education, recognition, required medical care and above all love and kindness, thus helping them to face the future with confidence. 

The United Nations’ (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing the global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.
