A staggering number of 131 girls, all below the age of 16, were victims of sexual assaults in the month of October, in Sri Lanka, the Police Children and Women’s Bureau revealed
During a media conference, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Police Children’s and Women’s Bureau, Renuka Jayasundara, provided further details on the matter.
She expressed deep concern over the 131 reported cases and revealed that, even more distressingly, 10 of the victims are currently pregnant.
In September, State Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Geetha Kumarasinghe, disclosed that within that month alone, 168 girls under the age of 16 had experienced sexual abuse while 22 of these cases resulted in child pregnancies, further emphasizing the urgent need for effective measures to address this grave issue.
The rising number of child rape cases is a deeply concerning trend that demands immediate attention from the authorities, community leaders and society as a whole.
