168 rape cases reported in September, 22 of them pregnant: Eran

• 11,000 child abuse incidents reported in Sri Lanka in 2021

A total of 168 rape cases of girls under the age of 16 have been reported in this country in September this year, MP Eran Wickramaratne said. While addressing a committee meeting at the Colombo District Secretariat, he said 22 of them were pregnant. According to the data from the Child Protection Authority, a total of 11,000 child abuse incidents were reported in Sri Lanka in 2021, the MP said. At least 41% of all reported child abuse cases in 2022 fall under sexual abuse, he said.

When compared to the number of cases reported in September this year, that shows an increase, the MP added.
