A confidential report containing 18 names of students identified as engaging in and giving leadership to inhuman ragging of freshers and resorting to violence within the Buddhist and Pali University premises in Homagama had been handed over to President Ranil Wickremesinghe by the national intelligence agencies, highly placed sources said.

The report stated that among those identified are members of the students’ union and activists of the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF).

Sources said swift action would be taken against the perpetrators of ragging and violence within the university premises, based on the report. The report said among the inhuman ragging carried out by these students was: 1) dipping freshers in holes filled with water and rotting dirt 2)forcing new students to smoke ganja and crystal meth 3) getting freshers to do exhausting and unbearable physical exercises 4) forcing freshers to masturbate and pose in sexual acts 5)selecting some as homosexuals and asking them to engage in such acts.

The report said that on November 30th the group of students engaged in ragging had protested against police entering the university premises and had threatened the students who were against ragging.

The report observed that the administration of the university had not taken adequate action to control the ragging taking place within the university premises. It said there was no specific authority within the university to look into the disciplinary action and that decisions taken by the UGC and the Ministry with regard to ragging had not been implemented within the university.
