In a shocking revelation, health authorities have reported a significant surge in heroin use among school children, particularly those aged between 15 and 18.
Addressing the media, Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Gihan Abeywardena said it’s a pathetic situation that school children have become victims of heroin and other illicit drugs.
Dr. Abeywardena explained that heroin users often exhibit a high inclination to switch to other illicit substances, making their situation even more perilous.
Moreover, sudden cessation of heroin use can lead to physical dependence, resulting in withdrawal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. Besides, overdose on heroin can severely depress breathing, potentially leading to fatal consequences.
“The consequences of this alarming trend are already being felt, as an increasing number of school and university students are being hospitalized due to convulsions or fits, which can be directly attributed to the overuse of heroin,” he underscored.
In light of these distressing developments, Dr. Abeywardena stressed the significant responsibility that falls on parents to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children’s activities. Early detection and intervention are crucial in preventing the escalation of drug abuse among school children.
