Allowances, salaries for CEB employees Over Rs.3.5bn paid during past three months: Minister

• Under the current tariff structure, the CEB’s total revenue for October  was Rs. 33.6 billion, and it was Rs 35.6 billion in November
• More than 1,100 employees will retire in 2023 and the company will not make any new hires to replace them

Over Rs. 3.5 billion have been paid as allowances and salaries for employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) during the past three months, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said yesterday.   
A total salary payment ranging from Rs 3.5 billion to Rs 3.7 billion was made during the past three months.   
According to the salary information sheet for the year 2022, published on the minister’s official Twitter page, Rs. 3,535.62 million was paid as allowances and salaries for September. Rs. 3,589.21 million was paid during October, and Rs. 3,662.28 million was paid for November.  

  With the current tariff structure, the CEB’s total revenue for October was Rs. 33.6 billion and Rs. 35.6 billion for November.   

Furthermore, he stated that more than 1,100 employees will retire in 2023 and that the company will not make any new hires to replace them.   

Meanwhile, the requirement of heavy fuel oil (HFO), naptha, and diesel for the CEB to operate power stations in January is Rs. 35 billion, he said.   

The requirement for coal payments for January is Rs. 38.45 billion, the minister added.   

A discussion was held yesterday at the Ministry with the representatives of the CEB Senior Engineers’ Union, the Electrical Superintendents’ Union, Technical Services, and other union members regarding the proposed electricity tariff adjustments, the restructuring of CEB, CEB expense management, and other service issues.
