The residents of Ambanpola are protesting and complaining of an illegal liquor shop established amidst five schools, Dhamma schools and temples in the town, saying the bar rigorously violates Excise laws.

Several hundred parents, teachers, students and clergy of Ambanpola in Galgamuwa took to the streets recently demanding the authorities to annul the license given to operate the wine stores defying Excise laws.

The residents claim that the said liquor shop had been permitted to be setup within a 100 metre radius of two schools, two dhamma schools and three temples.

The issue had been brought to the knowledge of the Divisional Secretary and the area Deputy Excise Commissioner.

When contacted an Excise official said that they have received complaints about this issue and an inquiry is underway.
