The substandard anaesthetic drugs that is said to have caused the deaths of two children at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital are still in use despite the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) assurance that the stocks would be recalled, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa alleged yesterday.

He told Parliament that it was reported that several more deaths have also been caused earlier due to allergic reactions to the particular anaesthetic drug.

The Opposition Leader requested the Prime Minister to take steps to initiate an investigation over the incident and take necessary action.

“The NMRA assured the country that the substandard anaesthetic drugs will be removed from use. But, we hear that the controversial drug is still in use,” he said.
