Personal assets of those who strike if they commit an offence will be confiscated under the Essential Services Act No 61 of 1979, a Member of Parliament said yesterday.  MP Vajira Abeywardena said a person who commits an offence under this Act could also be subjected to two years of rigorous imprisonment.

“A person found guilty of an offence under the Essential Services act could be subjected to a fine which is not less than Rs 2000 and not exceed Rs 5,000,” he said, citing sections six and seven of the Act.  Also, he revealed that President has already signed a gazette notification declaring all transportation services, the Port and air transportation as essential services.
“One should keep in mind the essential services Act and work accordingly,” he added.
