Carcass of black leopard preserved in Colombo Museum

The carcass of the black leopard that died after being trapped in a snare at Laxapana Walamale estate last May, has been stuffed and displayed at the Colombo National Museum for the public to view.   

Wildlife Conservation Department Director General M.G.C. Sooriyabandara said the decision to send the carcass to the Museum had been taken upon a request made by the Ministry of Buddha Sasana & Religious Affairs, to the Wildlife Ministry.   

 “The decision was finalised once the court proceedings into the death of the leopard were over,” the Director General said.   

The black leopard was trapped in a snare at Walamale in the Laxapana Estate, Nallathanniya and was rescued by the Wildlife officials in last May 29.   

However, the leopard succumbed to its injuries while undergoing treatments  Wildlife & Forest Conservation Minister C. B. Rathnayake last Friday visited the museum to observe the display of the carcass.
