Opposition MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said yesterday he is opposed to the proposed privatization of hydropower generation under the proposed plan to restructure the Ceylon Electricity Board ( CEB).

Briefing the media , Ranawaka , one time power minister, said the CEB is proposed to be split into 18 sectors and other institutions to four companies. He said hydropower generation should not be entrusted with the private sector.

“If that is done, we will face problems. We need to economize the use of water in the reservoirs for power generation and agriculture alike . If it is in the hands of private companies, water may not be released for irrigation,” he said. He also said it is unfair to increase power tariffs once again. “In October, the CEB recorded profits amounting to Rs. 2840 million. There is no need to increase rates again. It is unfair to increase rates to recover the past losses,” he said .
