The Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday issued a warrant for the arrest of MP Wimal Weerawansa for not being present in court in connection with the case filed against him by Cinnamon Gardens Police.
The Cinnamon Gardens Police had filed a case against MP Wimal Weerawansa and five others for providing leadership to a protest at Baudhaloka Mawatha in 2016 causing disturbance to the public. MP Weerawansa was not present before court when the case came up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis.
Further magisterial inquiry was fixed for June 19.
Six suspects including Wimal Weerawansa, Jayantha Samaraweera, Weerakumara Dissanayake, Piyasiri Wijenayake, Roger Seneviratne, Mohammed Muzamil and Don Losian were named as suspects in this case. The seventh suspect Chaminda Jayalal is evading courts from the inception.
However the Magistrate observed that the case has been postponed from time to time without any reasonable cause and warned the suspects to be present for the next date of the case. During the inquiry before court Weerawansa was not represented by any Counsel.
