Committee to review abolition of duty-free vehicle permits and MP pensions

The Cabinet has approved the establishment of a committee tasked with reviewing and making recommendations on the abolition of duty-free vehicle permits and the elimination of pensions for Members of Parliament (MPs).

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held on September 30 at the President’s Office, marking the first meeting since President Anura Dissanayake took office.

A senior government spokesman confirmed that the proposal aligns with a key election pledge made by President Dissanayake.

Under the current system, parliamentarians are entitled to a duty-free vehicle permit every five years, valued at approximately $55,000.
