Contaminated food given to school children

An inspection carried out by Health authorities has revealed that rice and lentils supplied to schools in Balapitiya area to prepare midday meals of schoolchildren were unfit for human consumption. 

 Balapitiya Medical Officer of Health Dr. Supuni Amarakoon said the stocks of rice and lentils were infested with weevils and other insects and fungus. She said after receiving the government analysts report the food stocks unfit for human consumption were destroyed. However she said a part of the stocks had been used prior to the inspection carried out on public complaints.Meanwhile, Zonal Director of Education said the stocks of food were donated by the Shipping Corporation.
