A cricket coach from a prominent school in Wattala has been arrested by the Mahabage Police for possession of a T56 firearm, four magazines, and a stash of bullets. The weapons are suspected to be linked to underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
It has been revealed that the coach had been involved in collecting drug money under the direction of an overseas criminal associated with the detained organized criminal Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
The suspect allegedly transferred the collected funds to smugglers abroad, utilizing the Undial system for these illicit transactions.
The Mahabage Police made the arrest and discovered the T56 firearm, four magazines, 125 bullets, 18 mm 9 bullets, and a set of sports uniforms similar to those used by police officers, all hidden in a cupboard within the school’s sports room.
A team led by Mfurahabage Police OIC Chief Inspector Subhash Priyadarshana are conducting investigations under the direction of Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, with Western Province (North) DIG Rohan Premaratne overseeing the process.
The suspect had been detained for further questioning.
