Defence Ministry recalls weapons issued to civilians for life protection

• They will be reissued only after threat assessment  

Nearly 2,000 weapons issued for life protection of various individuals, including politicians, are to be recalled by the Defence Ministry.  

Among those who received weapons in this manner are politicians from the main parties. A Defence Ministry source said these weapons would be recalled for a threat assessment of individuals who possessed them earlier.   
After that, the source said weapons will be reissued to them only after threat assessments.  

The Ministry directed all license holders to return their firearms and ammunition to the Commercial Explosives’ Storage Facility in Welisara by November 07.
