The tally of dengue cases in Sri Lanka has surged past the 27,000 mark for the year, raising alarms among health officials and the public.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, a staggering 27,302 cases have been reported as of June 21, with the Colombo District bearing the brunt with 6,013 cases.
The Western Province remains the hardest hit, accounting for 10,202 cases, while June alone has seen 2,382 new infections.
The recent heavy rainfall across several parts of the country has exacerbated the situation, creating ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.
Health officials are urging citizens to maintain cleanliness and eliminate stagnant water to curb the spread of the disease.
“The public must act swiftly to destroy mosquito breeding sites,” a spokesperson for the Health Ministry stated. “This is a critical step in preventing further escalation of dengue cases.”
