Dengue menace looms as Sri Lanka reports 50 Dengue deaths

The number of dengue fatalities registered so far in 2023 has reached 50 with the tally of cases topping the 84,000 mark.


According to the Epidemiology Unit, as of December 22, a total of 84,038 cases have been logged in 2023, with the highest number being from the Colombo District, which stood at 17,803.


The Western Province has recorded 38,673 cases, the highest province-wise, while the month of December has also logged 7,550 Dengue cases. 

Speaking about the current situation, Dr. Nalin Ariyaratne, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), expressed concern as the country has once again entered a phase where an average of 250 cases are reported daily.


Dr. Ariyaratne highlighted that the ongoing rainy conditions are expected to contribute to a surge in dengue cases.
Therefore, he urged the public to take proactive measures by maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings and eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites to effectively combat the spread of dengue.
