A consignment of vehicles valued at more than USD 2.5 million has been donated to Katunayake International Airport by the Japanese government.

It included two fire fitting and rescue vehicles, a boat of high engine capacity equipped  with GPS technology, two double cabs and a pilot car.
The consignment of vehicles were handed over last morning to the airport authorities.

The Japanese government has made this donation in view of the International Civil Aviation Institute’s recommendation to keep a fleet of vehicles and boats ready for rescue operations in case of a plane crash in the Negombo lagoon or the sea beyond.

A senior official of the Police Anti-Narcotic Bureau said the boat of high engine capacity would be used by them for operations against drug smuggling.
