The driving licenses including heavy vehicle that do not have an expiry date will be cancelled by the end of this year and those license holders will be provided with a reasonable time to obtain their new licenses, Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) Commissioner General Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe said.

  • The DMT will provide six months from next year to get new driving licenses with an expiration date

Addressing the media, he said the physical fitness of such people has never been tested. When using heavy vehicle licenses, it had become a serious issue, he said.
However, the DMT had taken the decision to provide six months from next year to get their new driving licenses with an expiration date.
Therefore, the Commissioner General requested that the above license holders only bring their existing driver’s license and the medical certificate to obtain their new licenses.
There are about 1.1 million heavy vehicle driving licenses and 1.2 million normal driving licenses that do not have an expiration date.
The Commissioner General further said that the 800,000 driver’s license cards that could not be printed are currently being printed and will be completed within the next three months.
