A woman who gulped down heroin, packed in the form of a ball, to avoid arrest was admitted in a serious condition to the Intensive Care Unit of the Kandy National Hospital.

Police said she, with several others, had been engaging in the contraband trade of drug peddling in Mulgampola when a team of officers of the Kandy Division Anti Vice Unit carried out a raid on information from the public.

However, she had swallowed the stock of heroin which she had in her possession before the police could arrest her.

Investigations revealed that the suspect woman, popularly known as “Mulgampola Akka”, was an accused on bail in connection with a case pending against her in the High Court on the charge of drug peddling. Police said three others who were in the vehicle used by the suspect woman had in their possession 15.5grams of heroin.

A senior police official said several complaints had been made regarding the ongoing racket near a leading boys’ school and a girls’ school in Mulgampola on Peradeniya Road.
OIC Anti-Vice Unit SI M. D. Narampanawa is conducting further investigations.
