Claiming that the Elections Commission has failed to declare the Local Government election in December last year as claimed, The Elections Commission is conspiring to postpone the Local Government Elections, SJB MP Vijitha Herath charged yesterday.

“The Elections Commission’s failure to declare the Local Government Elections in December last year as pledged led to this suspicion, he said.

He told reporters that the Chairman of the Elections Commission informed them that the members of the commission would meet within next few days and take a decision.
MP Herath said they met with the EC Chairman to inquire as to why the LG polls were not declared as announced and when it would be declared.

“The EC said earlier the LG polls will be declared late December. But, there was no official announcement so far. We personally met him to inquire into it. The Chairman told us that the members would meet within the next few days and take a decision. However, we suspect the EC is conspiring to postpone the elections,” he said.
He said they suspect the EC was giving chances to the Government to postpone the elections.

“The Government is seeking various tactics to postpone the election. The EC is giving chances to the Government to achieve its ulterior motives,” he said.

The MP said it is the duty of the EC to conduct elections at the right time and added that there was no legal provisions to postpone the elections.
