Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando, Director of Communications for the Archdiocese of Colombo, said that the Presidential Commission report, which investigated the allegations made by the UK’s Channel 4 regarding the 2019 Easter Sunday’s attack, has gone missing.
Speaking at an event at the BMICH on Tuesday, Fr. Cyril Gamini said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had received the commission report, which was then handed over to the Attorney General’s Department, but it has now disappeared.
He further disclosed that, according to his sources, the report revealed the real evidence and other crucial information about the attack. He stated that several politicians would be behind bars if these facts were exposed and a proper investigation was conducted by the new government.
Fr.Fernando also highlighted that ‘Abuhind,’ who had been in communication with Zahran, the leader of the Easter Sunday attacks, is the key figure behind the 2019 attack.
Additionally, he revealed that the newly appointed Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Ravi Seneviratne, is also aware of certain information related to the Easter Sunday attacks. Following the election of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, two special committees were established to investigate the Easter Sunday attack and the allegations surrounding it. The first committee was appointed on September 11, 2023, in response to disclosures by Channel -4 regarding the military’s alleged role in the attack. This committee was led by retired Supreme Court Judge S.I. Imam with retired Air Force Commander Jayalath Weerakkody and President’s Counsel Harsha A.J. Soza. Their final report was submitted to Mr. Wickremesinghe on June 25, 2024. The second committee, appointed on June 12, 2024, aimed to investigate the intelligence agencies’ failure to prevent the attack despite receiving prior warnings. This committee, chaired by retired judge A. N. J. Alwis, delivered its findings on September 14, 2024.
