The Upcountry People’s Front (UPF) has taken up the salary issue of estate workers with the United Nations Human Rights Council
(UNHRC) in Geneva.

The party’s youth wing leader ,Letchumanar Sanjay, addressed the UNHRC while attending the 40th General Debate Session .

He said the history of upcountry people goes back 200 years .   “We are the ones who gave Sri Lanka its identity. Tea cultivated in Sri Lanka has always been popular. But there is no identity for the upcountry people who bear the brunt. Work, education, health, housing are all behind for our people. Similarly, infrastructure is also a question mark for us. Most of the women face many problems. Salary is the basic problem of our people. According to the labour law, a person should get at least three dollars. But here the whole family gets only 6 dollars.  So this is a fundamental issue. People face many problems due to lack of salary. Most students drop out of school.”   He called on the United Nations to intervene to provide a solution to this problem.
