Animal laws should be upheld when it comes to exportation of Toque monkeys. Former Minister of Wildlife and Member of Parliament Sarath Fonseka said yesterday. “There are rights pertaining to animals set out by relevant laws and these rights have to be safeguarded,” Field Marshal Fonseka told the media.
“Animals should not be exported for food,” he added. He said the Chinese Ambassador should find out whether any private company in China had wanted monkeys from Sri Lanka.
At the same time the MP said that animals such as monkeys and birds such as peacocks do destroy food crops. “ I have already spoken to the current minister in charge of wildlife Mahinda Amaraweera and had discussed the situation,” he said.
