As the United National Party (UNP) said no one should complain about power cuts and scarcity of essential goods if funds are allocated to hold the local government election, the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya questioned as to how one could intimidate the Election Commission.

“Elections Commission should not try to become heroes but should act in a practical manner when it comes to holding local government elections, “The Election Commission should focus on the practical aspect of holding the local government elections without trying to be heroic. Also one should not complain about power cuts and queues if the elections are held using available funds.” UNP Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

“One should remember that the government is running the state following an “eda Wela tours’ concept. (taking one day at a time) as funds are scarce. Therefore funds have to be spent on a priority basis. One can hold an election if funds are available,” he added.

“No one should intimidate the Election Commission. The trend which the state officers are intimidated when they speak the truth should stop. There is nothing wrong in holding the local government election as such an exercise will help to find out the stand of the people,” SJB MP Thushara Indunil said at a media briefing.

“Who is Akila Viraj to speak in this manner and intimidate others?”  he questioned.
