The bodies of parents and their two children of Good Shed road in Vavuniya were recovered last morning by Vavuniya Police.
Police said the father in the family had apparently committed suicide by hanging and suspect the others may have been poisoned.
The deceased were identified as Sivapadasundaram (41), Kousigan Maradananji (36) Kaushigan Maitra (09) and Kaushigan Keshara (03). Sivapadasundaram had been a coordinator in obtaining VISA applications through internet to go abroad and his wife a teacher of Sri Ramapuram Sigignana Balika Vidyalaya in Vavuniya.
Police said Sivapadasundaram had been in debt that it might have led to the killing of his wife and children and taking his life. Judging from the signs of strangulation in the bodies of his wife and children, the police suspect that he might have killed them and committed suicide.
Preliminary Magisterial inquiry was to be held yesterday afternoon.
Vavuniya Police and the Vavuniya Division Crime Investigation Unit are conducing further investigations.
