First celebration of International Day of Zero Waste today

The first celebration of the International Day of Zero Waste is today (30).  On a proposal by Turkey, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 30th as International Day of Zero Waste in its 77th Session held on December 14th, 2022. Accordingly, this day has been announced as one more step to further strengthen the ‘2023 Agenda for Sustainable Development’.

Turkish Ambassador R. Demet Sekercioglu will be the special guest at today’s celebration to be held at Water’s Edge, Battaramulla at 9.30am, under the chairmanship of Environment Minister Naseer Ahmed.   


Mr. Mark Peters, Economic Growth Advisor, United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/ Sri Lanka and Maldives Mission, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Supun S. Pathirage and Director General CEA P. B. Hemantha Jayasinghe are other distinguished guests.   
The Ocean Plastics Reduction Activity of USAID and the CEA has jointly organized this celebration in Sri Lanka under the guidance of the Ministry of Environment.
