The first consignment of eggs imported from India reached the Colombo Port yesterday, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando said.
He told Parliament that the eggs would be released to the market after the necessary tests within the next three days.
“They have requested three days to complete the necessary tests in Sri Lanka. We hope consumers will be able to purchase the eggs within the next two to three days,” he said.
The Minister said this in response to a question raised by SJB MP Rohana Bandara on imported eggs.
He said the government took a policy decision to import eggs following recommendations of the Cabinet sub-committee as there was a 40 percent shortage in egg supply in the country.
He said eggs have been imported under proper standards from reputed egg producers that supply eggs to world renowned companies.
The Minister said a decision has been taken to allow import of liquid eggs so as to meet the shortfall of egg supply.
