Colombo Additional Magistrate T.N.A. Illangakoon yesterday further prevented former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal from leaving the country until April 6, in a case filed against him over alleged misappropriation of Government funds and for crippling the economy of the country.

The case was filed by political activist Ranjith Keerthi Tennakoon. Counsel Sampath Mendis appearing on behalf of Mr. Cabraal filed the counter objections of the accused and written submissions on behalf of the accused during the inquiry of the case. Magistrate T.N.A. Illangakoon thereafter further extended the travel ban imposed on the accused until April 6 and fixed further inquiry for that date.

The complainant Keerthi Tennakoon by a private plaint filed in court, had alleged that the former Central Bank Governor had incurred around a 10.06 billion rupee loss to the government during his 2006-2015 tenure as Governor of the Central Bank. Complainant Keerthi Tennakoon had filed the private plaint in terms of section 136(1)(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act alleging that Cabraal is responsible for the country’s crippling economic as a result of his decision to pay a US$500 million as sovereign bond.
