Former Hakmana Police OIC ordered to pay Rs. 150,000 compensation

The Supreme Court has ordered former OIC Kamal Amarasinghe of the Hakmana Police Station to pay compensation of Rs.150,000 to the former Coordinating Secretary of the UNP Hakmana electorate for violating his fundamental rights by assaulting him and breaking three teeth while engaging in the 2010-Presidential Election campaign in support of Sarath Fonseka.

Besides, he was ordered to be paid Rs.100,000 from the government. The court has ruled that the Police are bound to uphold people’s fundamental rights and their dignity even when the election law is in force.
