Former Matale District MP Rohini Kaviratne complains of harassment on social media

• Says mudslinging of women politicians over social media has to be especially probed

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Matale District candidate and former MP Rohini Kaviratne has lodged a complaint with Rattota Police against what she claims fake news that is being circulated about her over social media.   
“My image has been tarnished by certain persons who are making false allegations and spreading fake stories against me by using fake accounts and profiles. I complained to the police and requested a probe on the matter,” Ms. Kaviratne told the media after lodging the complaint.   

She said the fake stories have tarnished her image. “This kind of exercise cannot sabotage my campaign,” she also said.   

“It is also essential to implement the laws that have been approved by Parliament on cyber crimes and on controlling social media,” she added.   

She said the mudslinging of women politicians over social media has to be especially probed as such incidents have been frequent.   

Ms. Kaviratne lodged complaints with Former Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena that she was verbally abused by a former Member of Parliament. There were heated arguments in the House with regard to the incident.
