GENERAL STRIKE - A PARTIAL SUCCESS

  • Only 44, 540 out of 148,451 public servants in six provinces participated

The General strike which was called by trade unions has been a partial success as only 44, 540 public servants out of 148,451 in six provinces have participated in it according to a government survey.  

Accordingly 36 percent of workers have engaged in the strike in the North Western province, 40 percent in north Central, 49 percent in Sourthern province, 25 percent in Central, 21 percent in Eastern, and 19 percent have engaged in the Uva province.   


As per the data government doctors have participated in the strike to a high extent. Accordingly 914 government doctors out of 1322 in the North Western Province, 434 out of 690 in North Central province, 1547 doctors out of 2472 in the Central province, 942 doctors out of 1339 in the Southern province 454 doctors out of 1338 in the Eastern Province and 730 doctors out of 918 in Uva province were engaged in the strike   


However data in the, Sabaragamuwa and Western province were not available though workers who participated in the strike in the Western province was reported to be high according to a spokesman from the President’s office.
