Gazette issued appointing Karunarathna Paranawithana as MP

The Election Commission has issued a gazette notification declaring the appointment of Karunarathna Paranawithana as a Member of Parliament to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Thalatha Athukorala.  

Paranawithana functioned as a Deputy Minister in the 2015 government.  

Former SJB MP Thalatha Athukorala resigned as a Member of Parliament recently and hence her seat 
fell vacant.  

Karu Paranawithana is an active member of United Republic party led by MP Patali Champika Ranawaka. Mr. Paranawithana is the latest replacement in Parliament as there were few during the past few months. MP Manusha Nanayakkara was replaced by MP Bandula Lal Bandarigoda, while Sanath Nishantha was replaced by Jagath Priyankara, Chaminda Wijesiri was replaced by Nayana Wasalathilake, while vacancy created by MP Harin Fernando is yet to be replaced.
