Govt. approves lease of Kurulu Uyana Island to Sri Jinarathana Bhikshu Training School

•  Land will be leased for 50 years based on the value determined by the Government Chief Assessor

The government yesterday approved handing over the plot of land at Beira Lake, known as Kurulu Uyana Island, to the Sri Jinarathana Bhikshu Training School Committee for development under a long-term lease.   

 Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana said during the cabinet meeting that the land will be leased for 50 years based on the value determined by the Chief Assessor of the Government.   

The proposal to transfer the land was made by the Urban Development and Housing Minister, he said.   

Accordingly, the 143-perch Kurulu Uyana Island in southwest Beira Lake was transferred to the Urban Development Authority in 2000 as part of the Colombo City Development Plan under the Beira Lake Restoration Project.   

However, the Chief Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple requested to use this underutilized land to develop a Buddhist site and tourist attraction showcasing 
cultural heritage.
