The government including President Ranil Wickremesinghe should take the responsibility for the death of the National People’s Power (NPP) member and NPP Nivithigala Pradeshiya Sabha candidate Nimal Amarasiri, who died after being injured during the tear gas attack on the NPP protest march on Sunday, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said yesterday.

He told a news conference that they staged a peaceful protest march against depriving people of their right of election and said the government should immediately stop attacking people who are engaged in peaceful protests.

He said if the President was attempting to resort to dictatorial actions, the NPP is ready to take all democratic measures against such actions.   “No one should lose their lives for the sake of democracy. Nimal Amarasiri joined the protest for the sake of people’s rights and for the sake of the right to elect a government of his consent. We assure you that we will take this battle to victory,” he said.
