Grade 5 scholarship children hit by bad weather and lack of transport facilities

The weather gods did not show mercy to children who sat for the grade five scholarship exam in Matara as they had to be transported to exam centers in boats and in armoured cars, it was reported yesterday.   


Sri Lanka army had to go in for action to take the children to examination centers in Matara.

Children in Haliela and Digalla also faced inconvenience as buses were late. “Buses which usually start plying from 5.55am and 6.30 am did not ply,” parents said.     Meanwhile heavy showers have been reported from hydro catchment areas as of yesterday. Accordingly Norton received a rainfall of 65.5mm, Lakshapana 65.8mm, Canyon 24.5mm and Bowatenna 70.8mm. According to Ceylon Electricity Board figures 57 percent of electricity was generated  from hydro power. Around 45 percent was generated from hydropower stations of CEB while 12 percent was generated from mini hydro projects. Spill gates of Upper Kotmale reservoir was also opened as of last afternoon.
