The team of surgeons at Badulla Hospital has achieved a remarkable feat by conducting the first-ever endoscopic surgery on the spinal cord in Sri Lanka without the use of anaesthesia. Led by Senior Lecturer and Neurologist Dr. Lakmal Hewage from Uva Wellassa University, the surgery was carried out successfully on a 72-year-old woman who is now on the path to recovery.

The patient had been enduring severe pain in the spine and experiencing difficulties in walking prior to the surgery.

Despite the patient’s pre-existing heart condition, which added to the complexity and risk of the procedure, Dr. Hewage and his team opted not to administer anaesthesia.

This decision marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s medical history, demonstrating the team’s expertise and pioneering approach to addressing challenging medical conditions.
