The Attorney General has informed the Supreme Court that a set of guidelines had been formulated to prevent ragging incidents in state universities.
Deputy Solicitor General Avanthi Perera appearing for the Attorney General made these remarks when a Fundamental Rights petition filed by University Student Pasindu Harshana Silva was called before Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Shiran Gooneratne and Justice Priyantha Fernando.
The petitioner was severely injured during a ragging incident at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura when a backhoe tyre was rolled over his body in 2020. The petitioner stated that as a result of this inhuman treatment, he was hospitalized for nearly three months.Taking the facts into consideration, the court directed the Attorney General to submit the final draft of the regulation to the court and emphasized the necessity of forwarding the relevant regulations to all universities.
