Justifying the request made to the government to lock down the Colombo Municipal Council area for at least two weeks, Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake said yesterday that she does not want the government to fail due to the coronavirus.

She said at a press briefing that she also wants the government to control the situation very successfully.
She said that 4,836 people in the Colombo Municipal Council area have been infected with Covid-19 as of yesterday and she pointed out that 229 of them belong to the Colombo Municipal Council.

“The death toll in Colombo is 28. About 70 percent of the Colombo Municipal Council area is now isolated. Mattakkuliya and Modara have been isolated but Mahawatta, Aluth Mawatha and Lunupokuna have not been isolated. There are several isolated areas in the middle of cleared areas,” she said.

She said that she is confident that they will be able to successfully control this situation if the Colombo Municipal Council area is locked down at least for two weeks and strict travel restrictions are imposed.

She said that steps will be taken to provide free face masks to around 650,000 persons living within the limits of the Colombo Municipal Council.
