The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) announced its intention to cut the electricity tariff by 50 percent by the end of January, offsetting the 18 percent increase implemented in October of the previous year, CEB Media Spokesperson Noel Priyantha said.

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) had given their approval for the CEB for a 18 percent increase in electricity tariff from October 20, 2023.
Addressing the media, he said that the electricity tariff was increased in February, reduced in June, and increased again in October last year.

Accordingly, the CEB is hoping to reduce tariffs by at least 50 percent from the percentage that increased in October.

The decision to reduce tariffs is under discussion, the spokesman said.
