An Inspector of Police and three constables of Lunugamvehera Police have been interdicted with immediate effect on suspicion of releasing the wildlife conservators who were arrested for transporting Ganja recently.

The wildlife conservators were arrested by Army Intelligence while they were transporting a stock of Ganja in official vehicles and were handed over to the police.  It is alleged that the police had released the wildlife conservators and produced four other individuals as suspects.

The wildlife conservators had been arrested by the army during a raid at Bogahawewa in the Lunugamwehera Police area. The police had produced in court four men involved in other offences in place of the wildlife officers.

Meanwhile, Asst. Director of Wildlife. Uva Zone has transferred a senior wildlife conservator in Lunugamvehera National Park and interdicted a wildlife guard involved in the incident.
SSP Tangalle Division has initiated a formal investigation of the incident on the instructions of the DIG Southern Province.
