IP charged with assault

The personal assistant to Nuwara Eliya District DIG who is suspected to have entered a hotel in Nuwara Eliya town, and threatened and assaulted the owner is to be transferred to the Kandy Police Division and a formal investigation of the incident held.   

Actg. DIG Nuwara Eliya District Mahinda Dissanayake said the Senior DIG Central Province Lalith Pathinayake has ordered a probe held by a senior official.   

He said in view of the General Election already declared, he sought the advise of the Elections Commission on effecting the transfer of the police officer.   

It is alleged that the IP had threatened and intimidated the hotel owner who refused his request for a bottle of arrack. The police officer had called over at the hotel by jeep with a woman and another individual.   

Meanwhile, the owner of the hotel Abdul Kapoor Mohamed Irshad said he made a statement in this regard to the police and requested to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
