Independent group to feature majority women candidates in upcoming election

An independent political group has announced a candidate list for the upcoming General Election, featuring 17 women out of 21 candidates.

Speaking to the media, Ajantha Perera, the head of the group, emphasized the distinctiveness of their lineup. “Our list will be special as the majority of our candidates are women,” she stated. This independent group will be contesting for the Colombo District and the Election Commission is expected to allocate a symbol for the party when handing over nominations.   

“We have decided to contest as an independent group to see whether we could bring about a real system change which the Aragalaya will be looking for,” Ms. Perera said.
