Former President Maithripala Sirisena is to go before CID today to make a statement on the remark he had made on Easter Sunday attacks.
Sirisena’s announcement that he would visit CID today came after CID said it was ready to record a statement from former President Maithripala Sirisena regarding his recent remark on the Easter Sunday bombings in 2019, where he claimed to be “well aware” of the true perpetrators.
Public Security Minister Tiran Alles on Saturday directed IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon to launch an immediate investigation into the former President’s remark.
Accordingly, the IGP instructed the CID to initiate a probe into Sirisena’s disclosure. The IGP earlier told journalists that Sirisena will be questioned within the next 48 hours.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena revealed on Friday that he is well aware of the true perpetrators behind the Easter Sunday bombings in 2019. He made this disclosure while addressing reporters in Kandy.
“The suspects who are currently in remand custody in connection with the attacks are minor offenders. The real culprits are still at large. However, I am ready to shed light on the perpetrators of the Easter Sunday attacks and make a special statement if I am summoned to court,” he stated.
Opposition MPs Mano Ganesan and Kavinda Jayawardene also on Saturday called for the immediate arrest of Maithripala Sirisena and to interrogate him regarding the remark he made on Friday, stating that he is aware of the mastermind behind the Easter Sunday attacks.
