Weligama Police said that a married man who had allegedly killed his mistress and fled the area was arrested five days later for questioning. The suspect is a 32-year-old married person from Walgama area in Matara.
The deceased was a 29-year-old mother of two who resided in Uruvitiya area of Denipitiya, Weligama.
On November 2, the Weligama Police had received an anonymous phone call informing that a woman had died in a house in the said area.
On the instructions of Weligama Police HQ Inspector DM Abeysekera, Police Constable Kumara (146) went there and informed the Welipitiya Coroner G. S. D. Wickramasinghe to conduct preliminary investigations on the death after which the body was taken to the Matara General Hospital mortuary.
The investigation conducted by the Weligama Police revealed that the deceased had been separated from her husband for seven years and was living with her two children in a house near her mother’s house and that she had had an affair with another person.
The deceased’s mother saw that the suspect was with the deceased at around 3.30 pm on the day of the incident. Since the doors and windows of the deceased’s house were closed till around 8.30 pm, she went there to inquire and found her daughter dead in her bed.
The Weligama Police reported this matter to the Matara Magistrate’s Court and the post-mortem examination was conducted by Matara Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Sumith Ambepitiya on Nov. 4. Accordingly, the death had occurred as a result of suffocation caused by covering the face.
By then, the suspect had fled the area and on the instructions of Weligama Police HQ Inspector DM Abeysekara, Criminal Investigation Division OIC Chief Inspector J.P. Upul Kumara, Various Complaints Division OIC Chief Inspector P. L. Keerthisinghe, Police Sergeant Samantha (55906), Police Constables Kumara (146), Dilan (70126) have arrested the fleeing suspect.
The Weligama Police will present the suspect before the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
