A person with counterfeit cigarettes worth over Rs.5.1 million was nabbed by the Ja-Ela Excise Station officials yesterday.
The Excise officials on information searched a house in the area and found 300 cartons of a foreign brand of cigarettes, of which the sale is prohibited in Sri Lanka.
The cartons contained 60,000 sticks of the particular brand of cigarettes, which is suspected to have been smuggled into the country.
OIC Ja-Ela Excise Station Wajira Wijesinghe and the team are conducting inquiries on the instructions of Assistant Excise Commissioner (Western Province III) Upul Kumara and Excise Superintendent R A D Indranatha.
