A mechanism is being prepared to provide some support to the teachers who have financial constrains to wear sarees to school, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said yesterday.
He told Parliament that he regretted to learn that some teachers were facing economic issues to wear sarees to school.
“There were media reports that some teachers found it difficult to wear sarees to school due to economic hardships. I regret this situation. Those who brought in this saree saga should be responsible for this. We are preparing a mechanism to provide some support to the teachers who have economic hardships,” he said.
The Minister said this in response to a remark made by SJB MP Rohini Kumari Kaviratne on the saree saga.
She said the circular issued by the Public Administration Ministry Secretary has not specified the dress code either for teachers or public servants.
She said the issue is not the saree worn by the teachers but quality education at schools.
