Minister warns senior Police officers over suspect’s confession video

• DIG Marapana had expressed regret to Minister Alles and promised that such incidents will not happen in the future

Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has strongly warned senior police officers, including Western Province (South) Deputy Inspector General of Police Gayantha Marapana, for interrogating the owner of a tattoo studio in front of the media.   

The video shows DIG Marapana and other senior officers questioning the tattoo studio owner in Athurugiriya, where a shooting occurred.  

The Public Security Ministry said that DIG Marapana had expressed regret to Minister Alles and promised that such incidents will not happen in the future.  

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon issued a new circular instructing all police officers not to broadcast statements made by suspects to the media.
