A consignment of BMW motorcycles of high engine capacity smuggled to the country was seized and a suspect arrested by Mount Lavinia Police Crime Investigation Branch yesterday during a raid on a garage in Batakettara in Piliyandala.

A 24-year-old suspect was the owner of the garage who had been assembling and selling motorcycles of high engine capacity, use of which has been prohibited by the government.

During the raid the police seized four BMW motorcycles of 1000cc, manufactured in Australia, four motorcycle engines of high engine capacity and chassis.

Police said the motorcycles and parts seized by them would be referred to the Department of Motor Traffic and the Sri Lanka customs for report and legal action would be taken against the suspect on that report on the charge of possessing contraband property.

A police team under OIC Crime Investigation Branch IP Amila Govinda is conducting further investigations on the instructions of SP Saman Jayasekara and SSP Mangala Dehideniya.
